Out-of-hours
Outside normal surgery hours you can still phone your GP surgery, but you will be directed to an out-of-hours service. The out-of-hours period is from 6.30pm to 8.00am on weekdays and all day at weekends and on bank holidays. Visit the out-of-hours care section for more information.
GP led health centres, open 8am-8pm 365 days a year, are another option.
It's your choice
Giving people more choice is a priority of the NHS. This is because research in the UK and overseas has shown that treatments are more effective if patients choose, understand and control their care.
Your choices include:
- The right to choose a GP and to change to another if you're not happy with the service you receive.
- The right to choose which hospital to go to if your GP refers you to see a specialist.
- The right to be involved in decisions about your healthcare and to be given the information you need to do this.
